As believers, we know who God is. We know God is love, good, and kind. We hear it at church every Sunday. We are reminded during the difficult seasons by our friends. If we grew up in the church, we heard is a lot as a kid. But has this knowledge of God’s goodness transferred from our head to our heart?
It’s easy to know in our minds about who God is, but do our hearts believe it as much as our mind knows it?
The bible teaches us about God’s character. He is love. He is good. He is kind. But, when following Jesus, there are so many times where we are afraid to follow and trust Him. We question His kindness and wonder, is He really as good as He says He is?
We all go thru moments of struggle and doubt. But what these moments reveal about us is that we really don’t know in our heart that God is love- that at times unbelief has taken stock in our heart.
If we really, truly believe God is good, then when He asks us to do something, we would follow Him without hesitation. Even in the midst of questioning, struggling and doubting, we will follow Him in surrender because we know His heart towards us is always good, even if it doesn’t feel good in the moment.
In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve were instructed by God to not touch one tree- the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God gave them tons of other trees to enjoy, including the tree of life. They had full access to the tree of life. Do you know what this tells us about God? It tells us that God’s intention for Adam and Eve was to experience true, abundant, everlasting life. THIS is who our God is. He hasn’t changed. He still desires His creation to live an abundant life that starts the moment you give your life to Him.
It doesn’t mean life will be cheery and easy all the time. In fact, following Jesus is hard stuff. But when you follow Jesus, the life He gives you is BETTER than any comfort or prize this world can offer. His love is better than life itself.
Ask yourself, do you truly believe God is good? Not just in your head, but within your heart? If there’s area of unbelief, there’s no shame. There’s no condemnation. There’s just an opportunity for God to prove to you how good He really is.
Recently I came out of a season where the Lord was going after unbelief in my heart. If you looked at my life, you would think that I was completely sold on the goodness of God. I did believe in His character and goodness, but there was a part of me that was doubting Him. Through the Lord asking me to surrender something, and my hesitation in obedience, what He was revealing to me that there was a small part within me that wasn’t trusting in His character- and He was going after it. This is how good God is. He knows the areas where we doubt Him and He is relentless in His pursuit of our WHOLE heart. He wants us to believe in His goodness completely, not just partly, and not just when it makes sense.
Take some time and ask God to open your eyes to see how good He is. He is a personal, intimate, detailed Father. He knows exactly what He needs to do and say to get you to believe in who He is. And don’t overlook the cross- the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ screams of the goodness, kindness and love that God has for us.
“Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. “
